Explore science-based ethical issues and conduct a scientific investigation related to animal welfare at Kyabram Fauna Park.

Program description

In this program, students will explore how the ethical guidelines of psychology relate to animal welfare at Zoos Victoria. They will apply these ethical understandings to a real-world example at Kyabram Fauna Park, challenging preconceived ideas and exploring the concepts of bias and affective state.
Students will conduct observations and obtain both qualitative and quantitative data in an authentic fieldwork investigation, developing skills in data collection, analysis, and scientific communication.

Students will learn:

  • To apply ethical guidelines of psychology to a zoo-based setting, and consider which ethical concepts relate to contemporary issues at Kyabram Fauna Park
  • An introduction or consolidation of Key Science Skills required for scientific investigations
  • To collect both qualitative and quantitative data, and how to analyse and interpret this data to recognise patterns, limitations, and make recommendations
  • Engage in critical and creative thinking while considering contemporary issues and solving problems
