Say farewell to the elephant herd before they migrate to Werribee

After many years of calling Melbourne Zoo their home, your friendly neighbourhood elephants are upsizing to a new 21-hectare elephant habitat at Werribee Open Range Zoo.

Before they pack their trunks, we invite everyone to visit them at Melbourne Zoo these school holidays and wish them well.

School holiday activity

From 21 September to 6 October, pick up a stamp card at the start of the Trail of the Elephants. Along the trail, you'll discover four stamp stations to mark your card and reveal a hidden design (can you guess what it is?). At the end, you'll find a special mailbox where you can write a personal message to the elephants. Use the paper provided, or bring your own farewell card or drawing from home.

Don't miss the daily Elephant Talk at 11am and 2pm.

More about the move to Werribee

The new, custom-built 21-hectare elephant habitat at Werribee Open Range Zoo is equivalent to the size of five MCG stadiums, or the entire Melbourne Zoo! The herd will have two modern elephant barns, seven different habitats, various elephant overpasses connecting the habitats, two mega pools and a visitor walking trail. The barns will be weatherproofed and have towering ceilings reaching more than nine metres and luxurious two-metre-deep sandpits, providing the elephants with comfortable sleeping mounds.

The new habitat is expected to open at Werribee Open Range Zoo early 2025.
